Wilhelminaplein 04

Description

The Town Hall, constructed in 1858, originally housed the Colonial Council, the Court of Justice, and even a prison on the ground floor. Today, it continues to serve as the center for legislative and judicial authorities. The prison was relocated to the suburban area of Koraal Specht in 1960 due to space limitations. The architect behind the Town Hall was likely First Lieutenant Engineer W. Schut, who headed the engineering department at the time. The building stands as an early example of neoclassical architecture in Curaçao, featuring grand columns, a large pediment, and a double staircase. Inside, the parliamentary assembly room is on the left side, while the Court of Justice occupies the western wing of the building.
