Description
The architectural style of this two-story house is typical of the second half of the 19th century, featuring a hipped roof and cornices on all facades. In the early 20th century, the ground floor was divided into two residential units: Consciëntiesteeg 72 and Rifwaterstraat 11. Tailor Gerardo Lazaro Ferrero, known as Shon Ya Sneiru, lived and worked at Rifwaterstraat 11 with his wife, Shon Chia. They also ran a small grocery store. Shon Ya Sneiru lived to be 101 years old, and after his death, Shon Chia continued living there.
In 1981, Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao bought the building from the Van Rosberg heirs. Mr. Johan Stegeman opened a bookbinding shop at Consciëntiesteeg 72. Artist Dinneke van der Geest had a studio on the second floor (Rifwaterstraat 9) for several years. After she left, the bookbinder rented this space as well. When Shon Chia passed away, Mr. Stegeman rented the entire ground floor, which was then restored to a single unit.
Currently, the building houses an upstairs and downstairs residential unit.
