Description

The corner building, characterized by its curved baroque façades, has its roots in the mid-18th century. The earliest documented record, dating back to 1764, names the widow of Herman Schuman as its owner.

In the 1930s-1940s, the drawing room on the main floor of the dwelling served as the first synagogue for the Ashkenazi Jewish community on the island. Rabbi Schmukler, who was also a ritual slaughterer, resided with his daughter Sabina on the gallery next to the drawing room. On the top floor, several Jewish families sought refuge after fleeing Europe. After the synagogue’s relocation, the drawing room was repurposed into a meeting space for the Harbor Union.

In 1999, when N.V. Stadsherstel took over as the new owner, the ancient building was in poor condition. Unfortunately, the roof collapsed, resulting in the loss of the curved Baroque dormers and a portion of the façade.
