Description

This building’s story is tied to the De Windt family. Andries Kranwinkel built the front section in 1849. After selling it to Isaac Josef de Windt in 1896, it stayed in the family for over a century. Isaac’s son, Lorenzo (Shon Lou), added a large extension at the rear and bought the house next door, Consciëntiesteeg 63.

Isaac de Windt ran a grocery store on the ground floor, which was continued well into the 20th century by his son Lorenzo and his granddaughters, Aunt Fien, Aunt Shon, and Aunt Bea, who sold the best ‘Ham di Pasku’ year-round. Fresh groceries came from Hofi Gosie, also family-owned. Aunt Jojo, rumored to be their illegitimate sister, lived with them. Their brothers, Eusebio and Ezikito, ran a fabric store and a tailor shop across the street at Consciëntiesteeg 68 and 70. Another brother, Isaac de Windt Jr., lived on the second floor until his death in 1993.

In November 2020, the façade collapsed during heavy rain. The heirs sold the building to Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao, which restored it by 2024. The building now awaits its next chapter.
