Fleur de Marie 48, 48a, 48b

Description

Two blocks of rowhouses were built in the early 20th century, this one and Fleur de Marie 35, 35A, and 35B. They were likely developed by the merchant Pieter Lourens de Haseth, who owned this section of Fleur de Marie from 1891 onward. The owner utilized the flat terrain of Fleur de Marie to construct stone houses for rental purposes. On the rocky hill of Fleur de Marie, workers built their own dwellings on small leased plots, predominantly using wood. With the arrival of the refinery in 1915, Fleur de Marie transformed into a bustling residential area, housing at one point more than 2000 people from diverse backgrounds. However, the construction of the Juliana Bridge in the 1970s led to the demolition of a large part of the neighborhood.

Since 2001, this part of the Fleur de Marie neighborhood has been owned by Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao and N.V. Stadsherstel Willemstad.
