Description

Enclosed by four alleys, this interwoven complex now houses five residential units. Andries Munnigh combined three plots between 1834 and 1840 and likely constructed the current merchant’s house with annexes, which are now divided into the units at Van Dijksteeg 1, St. Martinsteeg 4, and Zaantjessteeg 21-23. In the early 20th century, a smaller house was added at Van Dijksteeg 3.

Munnigh served as the district head of Otrobanda’s fourth district, Colonial Warehouse Manager, and first lieutenant in Curaçao’s militia. He also owned Schrijnwerkerstraat 12-14. Over the century following his death, the property changed hands many times and eventually fell into disrepair.

By the time Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao bought it in 1978, the neighborhood had deteriorated significantly. In 1985, as part of a social transformation effort, the buildings and surrounding infrastructure were restored and improved, marking the beginning of the Alley Area’s revival.
