Werfstraat 06

RCE.900.270, 1994-1995

Description

The two-story mansion, characterized by its curved Baroque facades, likely has origins dating back to the first half of the 18th century. In 1744, Willem Jansz Vermeulen sold the property, including a house, to skipper Jurriaan de Pool. In the 19th century, ownership passed to Jeudah Senior, who undertook an extensive renovation in 1866, aligning with the fashionable neoclassical style of the time. At the rear of the 18th-century mansion, he erected a two-story building housing shops and apartments, currently located at Bitterstraat 11-17.

In the early 20th century, the Baroque mansion served as the private school of the Conn sisters, where refined young ladies from Scharloo received instruction in literature and English etiquette.

In 1999, N.V. Stadsherstel Willemstad acquired and meticulously restored these unique buildings, establishing their office on the belle étage of Werfstraat 6.
