Description
In earlier times, these small buildings at the entrance of the Fleur de Marie neighborhood housed the grocery shops of Maria Louisa Daal, Walter, and Trei. Establishments like these were essential for the neighborhood residents, to buy their daily necessities. Additionally, vendors frequented Fleur de Marie to sell their goods. In the 1940s-1950s, notable figures like Clara di Salu (Clara of the salt) would walk from the Koraal Specht area with a basket of salt atop her head, while Toni, the milkman, arrived in his pickup truck loaded with large cans of fresh milk. His whistle would beckon eager customers to purchase a pan of dairy. Fisherwomen from the seaside village of Boca Sami (Sint Michiel) would also visit, singing loudly as they offered their catch of the day.
Since 2001, ownership of most of the Fleur de Marie neighborhood has been held by Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao and N.V. Stadsherstel Willemstad.
