Description
Most likely dating back to the 18th century, this small house is among the older structures in the area. In 1790, Francisco Diego Hernandez became the owner of the plot, which included the house and two small annexes. Francisco was married to Regina Marina Hernandez, a free mulatto woman. In a kind gesture in 1804, he bestowed the house and one of the annexes upon Regina, while the southern annex became the property of his daughter, Maria Barbara Hernandez. These two properties (IJzerstraat 52-56/58) were brought back together when shoemaker Emile Joubert acquired them both in 1873.
At present, the old house serves as a kitchen for the restaurant located next door.
