Scharlooweg 009

Scharlooweg 9 before restoration

Description

Isaac Salas built this neoclassicist house in Scharloo in 1879, after losing his home in Pietermaai to the big hurricane of 1877. After a few years, he sold it to Elias de Marchena. The De Marchena family briefly ran a boarding house in the building in the 1940s, housing some well-known tenants of their time. Eventually, it was sold to the widow of Hubert Salas Sr. The building served as a residence for the Salas family until the 1990s, after which the Curaçao Monument Foundation bought and restored it. The building is currently utilized by the Venezuelan Consulate.
